Stan Cardwell – Lead Pastor

Pastor Stan has served in personal ministry for over twenty-five years in 5 churches, including Cumberland, MD, Leonardtown, MD, and Berkeley Springs, WV; a church plant in Abingdon, MD; and now Community Church. Along the way, he spend one year working toward his Doctor of Ministry in the Beeson Pastoral Leadership and Biblical Preaching program at Asbury Theological Seminary. That year was ministry transforming due to visiting and learning from some of the most innovative pastors in some of the largest churches in the United States and world. His churches have, by God’s grace, grown in very different settings and ministry styles.

Stan’s pastoral role has him wearing many hats, but his favorites are creative worship design, missional outreach, culture watching and disciple building. He has a passion to see people come alive in Christ and grow into fully-devoted followers of Jesus. And his great desire for Community Church is that God’s vision for our church would grow us, equip us and sustain us, long after Pastor Stan is called to other mission fields.

Stan’s wife is our children’s director, Michelle. They met in Lansdale, PA when Stan was working as a civilian engineer for the Naval Air Development Center in Warminster. They have been married for thirty wonderful and crazy years, and have four (semi) grown children – Rachel, Rebecca, Daniel, and Lazarus, who was adopted from Uganda and brought home in 2009. Rachel is a graphic designer/video editor and hopes to put her talents to use in church ministry; Rebecca is a Spanish, ESL teacher and has a missionary heart for Nicaragua; Daniel is finishing up his degree in English from Towson; and Laz is a pre-med/political science student at Towson.

As a child growing up in rural West Virginia, Stan never dreamed he would travel the world. He and Michelle have traveled in part of together to Jordan, Israel, and Egypt, South Korea, Uganda, Guatemala, and Zimbabwe. Each trip has deepened his faith and given him an appreciation for world cultures. As well as a son!

Stan’s interests are as varied as his eclectic personality. In his younger days he loved to play basketball, hunt, and fish. Now reading, technology, outdoor projects, and (someday) hiking (when his back cooperates) are his renewing activities.
